Harvey Weinstein: my dad's death was the moment I discovered the wonders of the world of cinema
A movie is like a painting. You don’t have to restrict yourself to a particular genre or convention, you’re free to choose any colours and mix them as you please.
Harvey Weinstein, founder Miramax, was one of the most eagerly awaited guests at the Astana film festival. To understand why, you only have to take a look at his filmography. The programme dedicated a special place to an individual retrospective of the producer of Pulp Fiction, The English Patient, The Kill Bill dilogy, and The Lord of the Rings trilogy. In addition, he was the only guest at the festival who flatly refused to give any interviews; so we had to make the most of his press conference to ask our questions.

Yuen Woo-Ping: I became a director because I was lazy
I have always been and still am a perfectionist. And this is not for material gain, rather because I pay great attention to quality. I don’t simply want to receive money, but to create something extraordinary. After editing I review the film and say: “It could have been better!" I think that one has to be stretched to the limit. I always try to achieve perfection and it always ends up being “somewhere in the target area”.

Money and fame is indeed a drug, a very dangerous drug one can easily get hooked on and find terribly difficult to give up. It overwhelms you and changes your nature. I do not want to become a drug addict, therefore I regularly practice detoxication. Karate has become my detoxication method. Karate classes help to clear my soul and mind of star fever.

People are too self-confident, they overestimate their capabilities.
